On-Demand Physical Therapy for Stroke Patients

Strokes are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and the number one cause of serious disability in adults.  There are two types of strokes: hemorrhagic and ischemic. Hemorrhagic occurs when a blood vessel bursts in the brain. An ischemic stroke occurs when there is a blockage of a blood vessel or artery in the brain. This sudden interruption of blood supply to the brain results in a stroke.

During a stroke, every minute counts. The longer the brain is deprived of oxygen, the higher the risk for permanent damage, and death. Recognizing the warning signs of a stroke, and taking action quickly, can literally mean the difference between life and death.  Some of those signs include:

  • Numbing in the face, arms, or legs – most commonly one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of balance or coordination when walking
  • Severe headaches
  • Sudden dizziness

Physical Therapy After a Stroke

The effects of a stroke depend on the area of the brain that is injured -- as well as the severity of the damage. For most stroke survivors, rehabilitation will mainly involve physical therapy. The overall goal of rehabilitation is to help stroke survivors relearn basic muscle movements and motor functions. This is where physical therapists play a major role in the recovery process. While physical therapy is a crucial part of post-stroke recovery, getting access to quality physical therapy can be difficult because of physical limitations, the inability to travel,  and reliance on others.

Driving to get to your appointments after a stroke can often be a huge safety concern. Paid transportation is an option but can become too costly – especially if you need more frequent sessions. Because of this, family members or close friends are often the main sources of transportation. Having to rely on others to get around for simple errands may cause you to feel like a burden.

Being unable to get out and participate in your daily routine can also feel isolating for stroke survivors. This strain may trigger emotional changes that leave you feeling frustrated, unmotivated, and hopeless. If left untreated, this type of depression can interfere with your recovery, and affect your overall quality of life. But here’s the good news: There are therapies available for post-stroke rehabilitation that let you regain your independence and recover in the comfort of your own home.

Some of the benefits of on-demand physical therapy for post-stroke patients include:

  1. Ease of access. Your PT comes to your home. No need to worry about how to get to your appointment, or if there will be obstacles to overcome -- like stairs -- when you arrive at your appointment.
  2. Tailored treatment. When your PT is able to see and experience your living situation, they are able to tailor your therapy sessions to your specific needs. Being able to assess things like the layout of your home can help determine the best plan for mobility, etc. Even things like being able to provide you with the best place to keep your cane or walker in your home for the best access is a huge advantage.
  3. One-on-one care. You will receive professional care and undivided attention in a comfortable setting.
  4. Independence. Feeling less reliant on your family can boost confidence and motivation for continued recovery.
