What to Expect at Physical Therapy: The Initial Evaluation

This is where your healing begins. The first step allows your physical therapist to fully understand the breadth of your condition. Your initial session will involve a full evaluation, which may include the following:

Medical Assessment-1

Your physical therapist will begin with a discussion about your medical history, current condition, and the specific symptoms you are experiencing to better understand the full scope of your condition and how it’s affecting your daily life.


Physical Examination-1

You can expect a thorough physical examination where your therapist assesses your mobility, strength, flexibility, balance, and — in some cases —  your pain levels. This might involve specific tests to evaluate the affected area. This is often a great time to discuss any concerns you might have about your current condition or treatment goals. It's also a good time to talk about any specific movements that cause discomfort.


Goal Setting-1

After reviewing your symptoms and physical condition, your therapist will talk to you about setting realistic goals throughout your course of care and what you hope to accomplish. This will help your PT develop a treatment plan that works for you.


This initial session is as much about getting to know you as it is about assessing your physical condition, so you should be open and honest with your physical therapist about your goals, concerns, and expectations.

What Can I Do to Prepare for My First Physical Therapy Session?

Before you step into your first session, taking a moment to prepare can make all the difference and even boost your confidence when you start that first appointment.

First, dress comfortably. Go for something like your favorite gym clothes—anything that lets you move easily since you'll be stretching and exercising throughout your session. It's also a good idea to bring a list of your medications, medical history, and any questions you might have. This keeps you organized so you don’t leave out anything important.

Once you’ve prepped for your first session and had your initial exam, you’ll be well on your way to recovery, following a treatment plan tailored specifically for you. It will be up to you to follow through with your prescribed course of care.
